Highlights from NACACs State of College Admission 2014

The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) released its 2014 State of College Admission report this past May. The annual report is informed by national survey data from college admission officers and metrics gathered by the U.S. Department of Education. The report focuses on a number of issues relevant to Compass families such as 1) historic trends in applications to college, 2) popular admission strategies for students (e.g. Early Decision, Early Action, and Wait Lists), and 3) the most heavily-weighted components of the college application. In an effort to synthesize the report into something more digestible, we have created a categorized list of takeaways and notable statistics: Applications to College TAKEAWAY: Applications to college continue to steeply rise, with the majority of students submitting 3 or more applications. A third of college applicants are submitting 7 or more applications. With such a high volume of applications, It is much more difficult for admission officers to predict which applicants will enroll after being admitted. CLOSER LOOK: In 2013, 81% of students submitted 3 or more applications, while 32% of students submitted seven or more applications. Although it is commonly assumed that college admission, generally, is more competitive than ever before, four-year colleges offered admission to 64.7% of students on average. On average, the number of admitted applicants who later matriculated at a specific college the institution’s yield rate was 35.9% in 2013. Yield rates have steadily declined at four-year colleges since 2002. Admission Strategies: Early Decision, Early Action, and Wait Lists TAKEAWAY: The number of Early Decision (ED) and Early Action (EA)* applicants have increased at most colleges. Broadly speaking, applicants who apply ED or EA are admitted in greater numbers than traditional freshman applicants. CLOSER LOOK: 49% of colleges noted increased numbers of ED applicants; 78% noted increased numbers of EA applicants and 68% noted an increase in students admitted via EA. CLOSER LOOK: In 2013, admission officers ranked the following features of the application in order of importance: Grades in college prep courses Strength of curriculum Standardized admission test scores Overall high school GPA Essay Student’s demonstrated interest Counselor and teacher recommendations Extracurricular activities Class rank Studies by the US Department of Education have shown that although overall GPA serves as an indicator of a student’s academic performance in high school, strength of curriculum, especially grades in college prep courses (i.e. AP/IB), are better indicators of success in college. At selective schools   those that accept fewer than 50% of applicants greater emphasis is placed on strength of curriculum, overall GPA, the essay, letters of recommendation, and AP/Subject Test scores. Since 2007, the number of ACT-takers nationwide has eclipsed SAT-takers 1.84 million vs. 1.67 million in 2014. Contextual factors including race/ethnicity, first-generation status, alumni relations, and ability to pay were also evaluated in the 2014 report. It is my goal to become a school counselor in a local high school. As a school counselor, it is also important to try and understand the different experiences that children go through in order to get through to them. After studying the different counseling theories, I have discovered that each theory is valid and there are ideas and techniques that I would use out of each of them. A comparison of different conceptions about multinational companies’ social responsibility There have been different conceptions about the social responsibility of multinational organizations in their host countries. Arguments have been put across suggesting that the corporations have a responsibility to comply with the rules that govern a particular country. Other critics have considered it better if the corporations are obligated to promote human rights across the globe, while others still feel that the best thing for them to do is to promote other small businesses that are in the host countries. Donaldson (Para 7) strongly feels that the human rights have been solely violated in all aspects, and therefore, rules should be put in place concerning violation of human rights by the corporations as they conduct business. However, in all of the articles herein discusses by various personnel, the conception of the compliance with the laws of host countries is highly valued. Carroll (125) writes about ethical considerations in business and suggests that we should consider the present and the future challenges. The conception surp asses the other two in the fact that, if a corporation would stand the challenge of complying with the laws of a host country, it is easy for it to respect the human rights. At the same time, it is possible for multinational corporations to support small business if a law is documented for them to do so in the host countries. Thus, the corporations should be ready to comply with laws that have been set in the host country (Beauchamp, 73). Conclusion Multinational corporations have tremendously increased in numbers over the years, and have at all times been successful. However, it is needful at such a time to think critically about how well their relations have been with their host countries. The issue is not how they conduct their businesses or how much profits they make over time, but what their social impacts in both their home and host countries are. Are they just out for personal gain without considering their neighbors? Such have been the questions put by critics who have stron gly felt that the corporations have neglected the social roles that they are supposed to carry out but to no avail. In my opinion, some corporations are always out for personal gain as well as to maximize the available opportunities for maximum profits, and do not care their reputation in their host countries. This is the reason why many theorists have to tire putting forward theories that explain why multinational corporations do not comply with countries’ laws. More over, most of them have a very great influence in the government policy in many countries, a factor that contributes to them frustrating many citizens, who in the end develop a negative attitude. Donaldson on his writing is concerned about human rights, where he ends up listing them one by one. As other critics, he argues that the multinational corporations have neglected the human rights issue which should be one of their major area of concern, thus it is important that the corporations’ management retra ce their lost steps in order to comply with some facts that are more meaningful than business itself. Furthermore, the moral grounds that are considered right should be constructed to enhance good social relations. The conception of the corporations being obligated to comply with the host countries’ laws surpasses the others, since compliance to the laws will entail complying with every other item. The objective of the paper was achieved and therefore, â€Å"the multinational corporations should be urged to comply with host countries’ laws,† both for their sustainability in business and to ensure their participation in promoting social responsibility as well as pluralistic relativism. Moreover, it is the oldest elective county office. The coroner or medical examiner is an ancient office of the common law. The principal function of medical examiner is to hold inquiry into the cause of an unexplained, sudden, or violent death, in certain cases with a jury. The importance of the coroner’s office has been considerably reduced from that of the fourteenth century, who had jurisdiction over a broad range of criminal cases and also over some civil proceedings. This paper is about the job of a present-day medical examiner also known as a coroner. Main Body The appointment, powers and duties of medical examiners vary to a large degree not only by country but by jurisdiction. In general, the medical examiner’s obligation is to make investigation of any sudden unexpected death, any death whose cause is not precisely determined and, surely, any death that may be abnormal. The medical examiner’s investigation is limited to determining the identity of the dead, in what way, at what time and in what place the death occurred, and the details required for entry in a register. In some states, however, the coroner has additional functions. For instance, in Georgia, the coroner has the powers and duties of a county sheriff. The coroner under certain circumstances (the sheriff is incompetent to act, the office of sheriff is made vacant by death or otherwise) may act as sheriff. In England and Wales, a present-day medical examiner must be either a person licensed to practise medicine or a lawyer of more than five years’ professional experience. Some medical examiners are qualified in two ways. In the United States, a present-day coroner is usually county-level officer that does not need necessarily to have any medical qualification. But in most states coroners are not necessarily medical examiners. Medical examiners are medical doctors who usually have practice in forensic pathology (An Overview of Medical Examiner/Coroner Systems in the United States 16). As indicated above, the medical examiner may investigate any death where there are uncertain matters about the circumstances or its cause. The deaths that should be reported to the medical examiner are as follows: The physician did not visit the patient during his last disease. The physician has not seen the patient during the specified amount of days directly prior to death. Physician has not seen the body after death. The death may have been caused by an industrial infection or violation of the person’s rights that caused him harm. Any sudden or not explained death. Any death in circumstances characterized by suspicion that something is wrong. Any death that an accident may have caused or in some way contributed to. Any indication that the death may be caused by neglect Any death that occurred in police custody Any death that occurred during an operation or anaesthetic. Medical examiner must acquire information about a person who is dead. Medical examiner obtains this information by conducting examinations, analysis of blood, analysis of DNA evidence, and analysis of documents associated with injury. The medical examiner determines the time and cause of death, and presents a formal death certificate and autopsy report. In case the death is concluded to be a murder, the information gathered by the medical examiner will serve as important evidence in the case. Nearly all deaths in the community are reported by the police, who are informed by the ambulance services when they are present at the scene of a sudden death. They also inform when crime is probable, a serious accident has taken place, or a body or remains, considered to be human, have been discovered. Any member of the community, who has suspicions about a death, may convey his feelings of anxiety to the medical examiner. Crime need not necessarily be suspected. It may also be a civil case, for instance a suspicion of medical negligence. The last is often reported by a relative or friend of the dead. When the accident has occurred, a medical examiner or representative of the medical examiner’s office picks up a deceased person from the site where he or she was discovered and brings the body back to the medical examiner’s office for examination (Hickman, M. J. et al. ). Much information is got through autopsies. When the medical examiner’s office orders an autopsy, it is usually performed by a pathologist. The pathologist’s report must be very detailed. A full account of the external appearances of the dead body must be presented. The information should include height, weight, and any distinctive features. After the autopsy is completed, the cause of death is determined. If the cause of death cannot be immediately made certain, or is unnatural, some delay is unavoidable, but attempts are made by medical examiner to keep this to a minimum. If, for instance, samples are directed for analysis in a case of possible drug overdose, the medical examiner will at most times open an inquest to take formal identification. In case medical examiner is sure that no further examination of the body is needed, he will issue an order for disposal (Rhine 1998). It is the duty of the medical examiner to hold an inquest when the conditions of time, place, etc. surrounding a death are of such a character as to make it seem likely to be a murder or other unlawful violet acts. In this case the medical examiner will refer the case to the court. The medical examiner enters on a list a jury, usually consisting of seven to eleven persons. When a medical examiner serves as a court officer, he or she presides over a court hearing that makes a decision regarding the cause of death and what should be done further. Conclusion As discussed in this paper, the medical examiner must investigate any death where there is uncertainty about the circumstances or its cause. For this purpose each medical examiner has an office, so that someone is always available to obtain required information.
